Essentials And Buying Tips For Wedding Bands

Highend Wedding Bands, Custom Made In 14k or 18k White Or Yellow Gold

In this section we will discuss all about wedding bands and outline the feature of what makes a good wedding band. The idea is to educate buyers regading various options for wedding bands and ensure that all aspects of the ring are understood. Most buyers lay complete emphasis on the price and design of a wedding band. While good looks are an important part of a good wedding band, many other features also need to be considered so that, the ring that you choose is sturdy and does not need to be taken for frequent repairs and modifications.

History Of The Wedding Band
Most people believe that the custom of wearing a wedding band originated in Egypt. It is believed that the Egyptians made the first version of wedding bands not from silver and not from gold but from the stem of a plant. These circular wedding bands worn by the Egyptians were meant to signify never ending love. The Romans gave different significance to wedding bands and used the ring to lay their 'claim' over their lady. It was used as a symbol of ownership and was to be worn on the fourth finger (ring finger) in a way similar to how the Egyptians wore their band rings.

Puzzle wedding bands were an invention of the Asians and the Arabs relied on puzzle band rings for a very interesting reason. A puzzle wedding band is infact composed of a number of rings that 'lock' into each other when worn correctly. These band rings are quite difficult to put together and lock into place. When Arab men expected to be away from their wives for a long time, they would make their wives wear such puzzle wedding band rings. The idea was to ensure that their wives would not be unfaithful to them and take off their puzzle band ring, when the husband was away! If they did, it would be awfully difficult to wear them the right way again and the husband would know that his wife had been unfaithful while he was away!.

The Americans during the colonial times, considered all types of jewelry to be of little moral value (worth) and jewelry was therefore prohibited. When the Americans took the pledge of staying and living together a simple thimble was presented as a token of love. This thimble could be taken to represent an 'engagement band' and once married, the lower portion of the thimble was taken off, leaving only the top portion on the finger. The remaining portion of the thimble that was worn looked much like a ring!

Significance And Meaning Wedding Bands
A wedding band is in most cases a simple ring made from precious metals like gold, silver and platinum. Wedding bands are generally worn on the fourth finger, which is also referred to as the ring finger. The thumb is counted as the first finger and the ring finger is the fourth finger moving away from the thumb. A wedding band symbolises a commitment of staying together and everlasting love. One way to increase the significance of your wedding band ring would be to, etch a name or message inside tha band of the ring. If wedding bands are being exchanged between the bride and bridegroom, the wedding band of each one could have the name of the other person etched inside the band of the ring. It is becoming increasing popular to etch the engagement or wedding date on the inner side of wedding bands.

There is another way to increase the significance of a wedding band and that is by setting a birthstone in the ring. It is has been believed for many centuries that, there is a gemstone representing every day that a person was born. Wearing a wedding band with your birth stone is supposed to bring good health and fortune and also ward of evils. Another good idea would be for the bride and bridegroom to exchange birthstones in their wedding bands. Such wedding bands help build a feeling of closeness and sentimental attachment even when one of the persons is geographically far away from the other.

Gemstone Wedding Band
A wedding band can be made with no gemstones or diamonds set in the ring. However, it is now becoming increasingly common to wear gem stone wedding bands. This is a good option but there are few things that you need to consider before you decide on the gem stones to be used for your wedding band. The first issue would be regarding the size of the gem stone in your wedding band. This is a very important consideration in the case of expensive gem stones like rubies, sapphire, emeralds, tanzanite etc. These gem stones are priced quite high when you need good quality and large sizes. Your wedding band could contain these gem stones in smaller sizes and this would allow a more moderate pricing for the ring. A wedding band with a large gem stone would also mean that the width of the band will have to be increased to accomodate the gem stone. Gemstones like aquamarine, tourmaline and iolite are priced a bit lower as compared to rubies, sapphires, emeralds etc. Finally, gem stones like topaz, amethyst, citrine, peridot etc are not expensive and larger sizes can be found quite easily. You need to consider the type of gem stone and ensure that it comes within your budget for the wedding band ring that you plan to order. You can email us at sales@kaisilver.com and get expert advice from our team of talented designers and craftsmen. You can clear all your doubts and queries without any obligation to place your order with us.

The next important aspect for gem stone wedding bands is to observe the type of setting used for the gem stones in the ring. Prongs settings use less gold weight but there is a tendency for prongs to stick in pockets and other places. This causes the prongs to open up and loosen the gemstone. Thin prongs can also scratch and hurt delicate skin, this is very important for mothers carrying infants and wearing rings with prong setting. A better type of setting would be to set the gem stone into the gold or border the entire gem stone with gold. This type of gem stone setting also protects the gem stone from side impact and increases the durability of the ring. If the design of your wedding band requires the gem stones to use prong settings, ensures that the prongs are sturdy and well rounded with no sharp edges.

When choosing the gem stone for your wedding band, consider the possibility of setting a birth stone in the ring. As mentioned above, this helps increase the meaning and significance of your wedding band. Kaisilver maintains comprehensive birth stone charts click for birth stone charts and check your birth stone. Wedding bands can also exchange birth stones of the bride and bridegroom. We are directly networked to the world's leading sources of gem stones and have preferential access to over 200 million carats of gem stones. You can therefore choose just about any gem stone that you need without being limited to what you see on our website. Every gem stone used in our wedding bands is handpicked and custom cut by experts.

The type of gem stone set in a wedding band will also have an effect on the durability of the ring. Certain gemstones are very durable and these include rubies and sapphires which come second to only diamonds in hardness. Sapphire, ruby and diamond wedding bands would therefore offer a good degree of durability. We would like to mention here that, it is not only the type of gem stone which will decide the durability of your wedding band. Other factors like gold weight, overall design and the type of mounting used to set the gemstones and diamonds, will together decide how durable your wedding band ring is. Other gems like topaz, citrine, tourmaline etc are not very hard and will need a fair degree of care when being worn in jewelry. The most important will be gemstones like emerald, kunzite and even tanzanite that need special mention here. Emeralds by nature have many inclusions and cracks within them and this makes them prone to breaking and chipping. Besides this, almost all emeralds are treated with natural oils to enhance their color and lustre. As a result of this emeralds cannot be washed in ultrasound machines or washed frequently with soap and water. You should consider these factors before deciding on an emerald wedding band. Another gemstone that needs to be understood is kunzite which is pale pink to deep violet toned pink in color. This gemstone fades in color when exposed to strong light and therefore needs special looking after. Finally, tanzanite which is a stunning blue to violet color is not really soft but can break and chip easily if struck with impact. This is not the gemstone to wear when you are doing a lot of physical activity.

18k Wedding Band or 14k Wedding Band
Wedding bands can be made in 14k or 18k gold but there are certain issues that you must understand before you decide on 18k or 14k gold for your wedding band. 14k gold is much harder as compared to 18k gold and this makes a difference to the longterm durability of your wedding band. Gold in it's purest, form is very soft and not suitable for jewelry making, it is mixed with other metals like copper and silver to make it harder and more suited to handling in the jewelry production process. 14k gold will have at least 58% of pure gold and the remaining 42% would be the other metals added to increase hardness. To make 18k gold, the metals added to pure gold would form 25% of the metal and 75% would be pure gold. It would seem that 18k gold being more precious as compared to 14k gold, would be a good choice for all wedding bands. However, this is not always the case.

If your wedding band is a large size choose 14k white or yellow gold as this would make the ring harder and more sturdy. A 14k wedding band ring with good gold weight would not bend and dent easily. Another reason for choosing a 14k gold wedding band would be if the ring has many gemstones or diamonds set in it. The hardness of 14k gold will allow the stones to be set more firmly in the band ring. Finally, for wedding bands that have etchings or engravings on the outside of the band, soft gold would cause the etchings to wear off with time and 14k gold would be a good choice.

Deciding The Width Of Wedding Bands
The width of a wedding band would depend on whether it was being ordered for a lady or man. The width could be a matter of personal preference, but few factors will always influence the width of wedding bands. The most important factor that would affect the band width of a wedding band would be the ring size. The larger the ring size, the wider the band as the ring would need to look proportionate. Smaller size wedding bands would have a smaller band width corresponding to their size. Another factor that would decide the band width of the ring is the size gemstones or diamonds set in the ring. Wedding bands should have a uniform band width all around, so if you set a 8mm square gem stone in your wedding band, the width of the band will have to be a minimum of 8mm or even 9mm. There is a growing tendency to have etchings done on the outside of wedding bands. These etchings could be symbols or the name of a person and need to be a minimum size to be readable or noticed. The width of the wedding band in such cases, would depend on the size of characters or symbols that you want to etch on the band.

We will add another important note here that most sellers will not want to explain clearly. The width of the wedding band should be proportionate to the weight of the ring. If you have a light weight wedding band with a broad width, the ring would be thin and flimsy and soon dent and twist out of shape. Sellers are afraid to increase the gold weight of wedding bands as this would increase the price and put them out of mass markets. At Kaisilver all jewelry weighs around 50% to 60% more as compared to the same designs sold by others. Since every Kaisilver wedding band is completely custom made, we ensure that the weight of your ring is always porportionate to the ring size and other dimensions of the ring.

You can use these parameters to guide you in choosing the width for your wedding band. There is no fixed formula to calculate this and a lot would depend on your personal choice, the gemstone size, your budget etc. You can always take the help of our experts in helping you decide, this will ensure that you have complete information before making your decision. Email us your queries at sales@kaisilver.com and a team of Kaisilver designers and craftsmen will consider all factors involved before making suggestions. You are under no obligation to order your wedding band from us and should therefore get all the advice that you can.

Suggested Band Width For Wedding Bands
Ring Sizes Men's Rings Ladies Rings
Size 5 To 6 5mm 4mm
Size 7 To 8 6mm 5mm
Size 9 To 11 8mm 6mm
Above 11 9mm To 10mm 6mm To 8mm

Type Of Finish For A Wedding Band Ring
Wedding bands can be ordered in a few different types of finish. The first, is a high polish finish that is the most common. This type of finish looks gorgeous for plain wedding bands without gemstones or diamonds and for white gold and yellow gold. There is another type of finish that looks dull and brushed and is referred to as 'sandblasting' in technical terms. This finish is very suitable for white gold wedding bands and even for wedding bands with gemstones or diamonds. There is another option which is to combine finishes on a single wedding band for example, the edges of the ring could have a high polish finish and the portion of the band in between could have the dull sandblasted look, or vice versa. Another not so common type of finish is the hammered look for wedding bands. Hammered wedding bands are generally made in yellow gold and are suitable for men. To clearly see the effect of a hammered look, the wedding band would have to be fairly wide at around 9mm to 10mm. Kaisilver offers all finish types for your wedding band ring and our team of experts can guide you in making the right choice.

Choosing Yellow Or White Gold Wedding Bands
Most buyers decide on a white gold wedding band or a band in yellow gold depending on their personal likes and dislikes. Before we move ahead with this discussion, we would like to explain that both white and yellow gold have the same hardness. The hardness of gold as explained above, depends on the gold karatage, with 14k gold being harder than 18k gold. When choosing yellow or white gold for a wedding band you should also consider the color of the gemstone (if any) being set in the ring. Certain gemstones like topaz, rubies, emeralds, citrine etc look good in both white or yellow gold band rings. However, for very dark gemstones like dark blue sapphires, white gold tends to exaggerate the color contrast between the white color of the gold and the dark color of the gem stone. This causes the dark gemstone to appear even darker and almost black in many cases. If you are not sure about which gemstone looks good with the gold color of your choice, write to us with details and we will help you make the right selection.

Two Tone Wedding Band Ring, Ideas
We mentioned above regarding yellow or white gold wedding band rings, these rings would be made entirely in white gold or yellow gold. However, there is another option that combines white and yellow gold in the same wedding band and such a ring is referred to as a two tone wedding band. If you look around you will find that, most two tone wedding bands are made as plain rings without gemstones or diamonds. At Kaisilver you can request for the two tone wedding band option, with or without gemstones or diamonds.

There is a very interesting option that you can choose for a two tone wedding band and it is related to the type of finish on the wedding band. Gold rings are normally finished in three main types, the first is the high polish look, the second is a dull brushed look and the third type is an irregular 'hammered' finish. You can create an exclusive and elegant wedding band in two tone gold by combining finishes on your ring. For example, a two tone wedding band could be made in yellow gold with only the edges (rim) of the band made in white gold. You can then choose a dull finish for the center portion of the band (yellow gold) and leave the edges (in white gold) as a high polish look. The two tone wedding band is an excellent choice for a ring without gemstones or diamonds.

Diamond Wedding Band Information
We will briefly explain the issues involved when choosing a diamond wedding band. A diamond as we all know, is an expensive stone and also the hardest gemstone known to mankind. A diamond measures a whole 10 (for hardness) on the Moh's scale of hardness. When you are looking for a wedding band diamond ring you should know that diamonds are sold by weight and the weight is measured in carats. An important point to note is that, if you had to compare the price of many small diamonds that together weigh a carat with a single piece of diamond that also weighs a carat, you will find that the single piece is priced much higher as compared to the smaller pieces. This is true even when both the diamond lots weigh the same and the quality of the diamonds are the same too. With this understanding you will realise that a diamond wedding band ring with good quality diamonds can be bought at a modest price if, the diamonds are many but small in size.

If you are interested in a wedding band with a single diamond of a fairly large size weighing around half a carat to one carat, you will be paying quite a stiff price for the ring. Good quality diamonds in these sizes are quite expensive. On the other hand diamond wedding bands with medium grade diamonds in large sizes would be an option, but remember that the larger diamond sizes also allows the flaws and inclusions in the diamond to be seen more easily.

Kaisilver has recently unveiled a scintillating collection of diamond rings with medium grade diamonds. This collection is called the affordable diamond ring, selection as the prices are modest and the diamonds are yet not the junk quality diamonds that you would normally get at these prices. With quality standards that are the strictest in the industry, our affordable diamond rings use diamonds that glitter and appear gorgeous to the eye. These are not the opaque quality powdery diamonds that you see in gold rings sold in big department and discount stores. Click here for our diamond ring collection and remember that we custom make all jewelry with your design or ours. You can ask for all design modifications for your diamond wedding bands or any other jewelry. You can even send us images of your favourite designs to be custom made.

Besides the size and quality of diamonds, there is another factor that will influence the price tag of a diamond wedding band. This relates to the shape of the diamond and diamonds in fancy shapes command a premium price. The standard shapes of diamonds are round and square but you can find diamonds in fancy shapes like heart, oval and even pear shaped diamonds. A wedding band with a fancy shape diamond would be quite expensive as these diamonds are not easy to find and the cutting of these diamonds requires a terrific amount of skill and patience.

Before we end this discussion on diamond wedding bands, we would like to make a mention about colored diamonds. Most diamonds that we come across are white diamonds, but in recent times using colored diamonds in jewelry has become quite popular. We would like to mention here that genuine colored diamonds are very expensive and these can be found in colors like black, brown, blue etc. Many of the colored diamonds that you see in today's jewelry are infact treated diamonds. These are basically genuine diamonds and are treated to enhance their color. Treated colored diamonds are not more expensive than white diamonds and are a good option for wedding bands.

Choosing Wedding Band Pairs
Marriage is a lifetime commitment between two people to stay together through good times and bad. It is therefore a great idea for the bride and bridegroom to wear wedding bands with the same design. Such similar wedding bands that can be worn by the husband and wife are referred to as wedding band pairs. You will find a lot of wedding bands that are suitable for both men and ladies and the only change that would be required would be to make the men's wedding band ring a bit wider than the lady's wedding band. In case of a gemstone wedding band, you can choose to exchange birthstones in the wedding bands of the couple. This also helps to strengthen the bond between the husband and wife and gives a feeling of closeness and being together even when they might be geographically separated.
